Scientists from the Private University in the Principality of Liechtenstein found that men infected with coronavirus had a greater increase in skin temperature, respiratory rate and heart rate than women. Research results published In the journal PLOS ONE.
1,163 people were included in the study and 127 of them tested positive for Covid-19. All participants were noted to wear special Ava medical devices on their wrists that collect data on body temperature, pulse, respiratory rhythm and other physiological processes. Researchers used this information to identify differences in COVID-19 symptoms between men and women.
It was revealed that the body temperature, respiratory rate and heart rate of men infected with coronavirus are higher than women. They also showed a greater reduction in heart rate variability, meaning the time difference between each heartbeat was smaller.
Heart rate fluctuates, not constant, because the cardiovascular system is forced to constantly adapt to the needs of the body, supplying blood to its cells and organs. A decrease in variability parameters indicates excessive fatigue and lack of appropriate heart tone.
Scientists also noted that women are more likely to experience difficulty breathing and fatigue after the acute phase of the disease is over.
