Stevia extract, powder and syrup have been removed from the list of permitted food additives. This was done because they copied another dietary supplement from stevia – steviol glycosides (E 960). The changes made to the list do not mean that stevia is dangerous and cannot be used in the production of products. Polina Vasilyeva, nutritionist, therapist, consultant in laboratory medicine at the Center for Molecular Diagnostics (CMD) of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of the Federal Budgetary Institution Rospotrebnadzor, told socialbites.ca.

As of February 27, 2024, the food additive sweetener Stevia has been removed from the list of permitted food additives. However, steviol glycosides E 960 remain on the list of permitted products.

“It is important to note that steviol glycosides E 960 remain in the list of permitted food additives, and this is the same stevia extract, only with clearer quality and safety characteristics, because the percentage of the content of the main substance, impurities, method of preparation, etc. for this it is more accurately prescribed. The list of approved food additives essentially eliminated the repetition of names of the same food additive,” explained Vasilyeva.

The doctor added that the code “E” is assigned to substances with proven safety that do not harm health even when consumed with food in the maximum permissible concentrations per day.
