In January 2024, the number of cholera cases exceeded 40 thousand people. This was reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) in its monthly report published on February 12.

According to information obtained, cholera spread steadily at the beginning of this year: In January alone, 40,900 cases of infection were recorded in 17 countries in four regions: Africa, the Eastern Mediterranean, the Americas and Southeast Asia.

It was also noted that the total number of people infected with cholera in the world in 2023 exceeded 700 thousand people.

Earlier, on December 7, WHO reported more than 610 thousand cases of cholera infection from January 1 to November 15, 2023.

In August, Deputy President of the Russian Academy of Education Gennady Onishchenko said that the spread of cholera in Russia is excluded. According to him, it is possible to catch cholera only through food or water, but in Russia the quality of drinking water is guaranteed.
