German veterinary scientists from the Leibniz Institute for Aging Research (FLI) have completed years of work on the first unified system for assessing the health of fish. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine Journal of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (JAALAS).

According to the report’s authors, the team monitored a population of several thousand kilifish (small goldfish) living in FLI laboratories daily for six years.

Information collected during the study of aquatic animals allowed experts to determine criteria for fish health based on data on the age, appetite, mobility and skin appearance of fish.

Health monitoring systems have long been standard practice in mouse farming, but have not yet been used in fish farming, particularly where fish are raised for scientific purposes, the researchers noted.

Veterinarians believe that the system they created will not only help their biologist colleagues, but will also find application in zoos, aquariums and fish farms.
