A Malaysian man who was fired from a faulty nail gun survived after a nail lodged in his brain. This was reported by daily mail.

A 30-year-old Malaysian construction worker was injured due to a safety violation during work. He did not wear protective glasses while using the nail gun. When the power tool jammed, the man looked directly into the gun’s barrel to test it and accidentally fired the gun into his left eye.

The man’s eye began to bleed and swell and he could no longer see. He was immediately given a tetanus shot, antibiotic drops and anti-seizure medications. The nail missed the eyeball, but broke the man’s eye socket and entered the frontal lobe of the brain. This caused bleeding that spread to nearby areas of the brain.

Remarkably, the nail avoided vital arteries and nerves, preventing long-term nerve damage. The man was rushed into surgery, where doctors successfully removed the nail and the patient subsequently spent five days in intensive care. The patient regained his health in the postoperative period, but one week after the surgery, he was still unable to close his eye completely and had difficulty seeing in his left eye.

Transocular intracranial injuries are fatal in approximately one-third of cases, even with timely surgery. The mortality rate with delayed treatment is over 53%. Many injuries can be prevented by practicing workplace safety.
