Argentina’s main union calls for general strike for January 24

General Confederation of Labor (CGT) -main union Argentina– the far right called for a general strike this Thursday for 24 January 2024 to protest the Decree of Necessity and Urgency (DNU), the neoliberal shock plan of the Government of Javier Milei.

The strike will begin at 12 noon local time until midnight on January 24 and will include a day of mobilization against Congress. Government hopes to get ‘omnibus bill’ approved in advanceAnother package of macro measures that addresses some issues that are not the responsibility of the DNU.

The text includes the declaration of a public and economic emergency until December 31, 2025, privatization of public companies, changes in the labor market, health plans or rent law.

CGT’s last general strike call May 29, 2019, on the eve of the end of the government of former president Mauricio Macri and before the elections that brought Casa Rosada Alberto Fernandez.
