Cardiologists from the International American Heart Association said moderate physical activity and avoiding bad habits during pregnancy help protect a woman’s heart health. In this respect reports MedicalXpress.
According to the organization, severe heart disease in a pregnant woman can lead to health-threatening conditions such as preeclampsia for expectant mothers and their babies. It is characterized by a significant increase in blood pressure, the appearance of protein in the urine (proteinuria) and other symptoms that indicate deterioration in the kidneys and cardiovascular system. Preeclampsia can occur after the 20th week of pregnancy. A serious consequence of this condition is premature birth, as well as disability of the mother and child.
It is stated that the presence of a healthy heart in a pregnant woman also contributes to the birth of a child with the normal functioning of this organ. Cardiologist Michel Albert, former president of the American Heart Association, said the role of a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy cannot be overstated. According to the expert, proper nutrition, moderate physical activity, including walking, and giving up bad habits are important tools in preventing cardiovascular complications.
The cardiologist stated that healthcare professionals can motivate expectant mothers to lead a healthy lifestyle.
