France finally withdrew its last military unit from Niger on Friday, December 22. This was reported by RIA News.
The official withdrawal of troops began in October after the rebels who seized power in Niger broke all agreements with France – a military camp in the city of Oualam in the Tillaberi region was transferred to the control of the Niger army. This camp covered a strategically important part of Niger’s border with Mali.
As of December 13, only 157 French soldiers remained in Niger, and the Niger Armed Forces officially announced December 22 as the last day for French soldiers to remain in the country.
French soldiers were sent to both French territory and Chad, neighboring Niger.
Before that Niger excluded From the Francophonie – an organization under the auspices of France that unites French-speaking countries.
