The Commission on Combating Pseudoscience of the Russian Academy of Sciences published a memorandum “On the pseudoscience of astrology”, the authors of the document reported this to socialbites.ca.
In the memorandum, the Commission summarizes the main arguments against astrology and also analyzes scientific data on the reasons for trust in it despite its long-proven inconsistency.
Therefore, astrology does not meet the methodological requirements of a scientific discipline. The popularity of astrology is explained by numerous errors in human thought, and experimental tests of the statements of astrologers give negative results.
“With this memorandum, the Commission states that astrologers’ statements regarding the connection between the positions of celestial bodies and the characteristics of a person’s personality and destiny have no scientific basis. Astrology may serve as entertainment, but if astrological claims and methods are presented as objective or scientific, they must be characterized as pseudoscientific,” the document says.
The Commission advises citizens not to use the services of astrologers when making important decisions about their lives, on the grounds that this may have negative consequences, while the media recommends that citizens refrain from advertising and disseminating astrology services, astrology institutes and courses.
Those who prepared the memorandum of understanding state that they have been working on the project for several years. Experts from various fields of science such as astronomy, physics, biology, medicine and statistics participated in the studies on the memorandum of understanding.
