Tampons and pads contain substances that disrupt the endocrine system. This has been shown by a published study. BJOG: International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
In the new study, researchers analyzed 15 articles published between 2013 and 2023 that tested menstrual products available in the United States, Japan and South Korea. In general, research confirms that tampons and pads contain a variety of endocrine-disrupting chemicals, including phthalates, volatile organic compounds, parabens, phenols, fragrance chemicals, dioxins, and dioxin-like compounds. Scientists noted that products such as menstrual cups and discs have not been adequately examined.
Body tissues in contact with pads and tampons are highly permeable, so various substances that, for example, disrupt the endocrine system, can enter the blood through them. Previous research has shown that they can affect a person’s hormone levels and cause health problems, including gynecological diseases such as endometriosis and uterine fibroids. Such substances are often structurally similar to hormones, so they can interfere with the chemical reactions involving them.
