Sally Adams, Lecturer in Health Psychology, University of Birmingham said Drinks containing small amounts of congeners and specific substances are less likely to cause a bad hangover, reports the Daily Mail.

Adams explained that different types of beverages contain different amounts of substances called congeners. They are added during the fermentation process to improve the taste, aroma and color of the drink. Various studies have shown that drinks high in these congeners (such as red wine) can cause a stronger hangover than gin, beer and vodka, which are low in congeners.

A study aimed at confirming the accuracy of this theory was conducted by scientists from Brown University in Massachusetts. Three groups of participants were asked to drink decaffeinated cola, vodka, or bourbon, respectively, and then self-assess the severity of the post-intoxication state. Those who drank bourbon, rich in the same congeners, felt worse.

Another substance that can make a hangover worse is histamine. It is found in cheese, meat, fish, sauerkraut and red wine. Histamine intolerance is thought to be caused by a deficiency of an enzyme called diamine oxidase. Therefore, drinking red wine can cause headaches and intestinal disorders in some people.

However, it is stated that there are no “safe” alcoholic beverages. The main determinant of a hangover is the amount of alcohol consumed, not the type of drink.
