A study conducted at the University of Birmingham found that most men are unaware that protein supplements for muscle growth can lead to an increase in estrogen levels in the body. The study was published on: Reproductive BioMedicine Online.

Scientists surveyed 152 people who went to the gym. 79% of men were using protein supplements, 52% were thinking about their fertility (ability to have children), but only 14% were thinking about how working out at the gym or taking supplements might affect their fertility. Interestingly, women surveyed were more aware of the effects of exercise and supplements on male fertility.

As scientists explain, both whey and soy protein can increase the level of the female hormone estrogen in men. Many protein supplements have been found to contain anabolic steroids that can impair male fertility.

“According to the World Health Organization, infertility is a problem of increasing concern, affecting one in six people worldwide. However, scientists stated that there is limited understanding worldwide that men are responsible for half of these infertility cases.

The authors concluded that people should try to learn more about the effects of the supplements they take. Additionally, most evidence suggests that natural food sources of protein, such as chicken, are safer than protein supplements.
