American Paul Whelan, who was serving his sentence in a Russian colony, said that he was attacked by a 50-year-old Turkish prisoner with anti-American views. This was reported by CNN.

“I stood up to block the second blow because I was afraid that he had sharp scissors in his hand that could be used as a weapon. Other inmates stopped him,” Whelan said.

He added that he then left the scene and started looking for security guards.

“There are no guards on the factory floors, and it was quite difficult for me to find prison staff who could help me,” the American continued.

Whelan eventually visited the prison doctor and reported the incident to the deputy warden. The convict wants the attacker to be tried for assault.

Previously at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said about a “serious offer” to release Whelan.
