Eating foods that cause a spike in blood sugar is associated with an increased risk of metabolic disorders. The research was published in the journal Scientific Reports.
A total of 527 adults from different socioeconomic statuses from Isfahan, Iran, participated in the research. Consumption of foods with a high glycemic index (that is, causing a sharp increase in blood sugar levels) was assessed using questionnaires. These foods include refined (purified) grains, sugar, potatoes and sweets.
The patients were divided into two groups: metabolically healthy and unhealthy. The second included people with two or more abnormalities: fasting glucose ≥ 100 mg/dL, taking antihyperglycemic medications, abnormal “bad” cholesterol (LDL) and triglyceride levels in serum, elevated C-reactive protein levels, blood pressure ≥ 130/85 mmHg . Art. and taking medication to lower blood pressure.
Significant consumption of foods high on the glycemic index has been associated with hypertension, and moderate consumption has been associated with increased triglyceride or fat levels. Many of the food lovers in the study had reduced insulin sensitivity, meaning post-meal glucose levels fell more slowly than normal. Scientists emphasized that patients with diabetes, hypertension and obesity should avoid foods with high glycemic index.
