A fit of laughter can trigger fainting due to the sharp drop in blood pressure. However, the probability of such an event occurring is low. In this respect reports Live Science.

American cardiologist Todd Cohen said that contraction of the diaphragm, as well as the intercostal and interspinous muscles, during laughing can lead to increased pressure in the chest. This change can stimulate the vagus nerve, a paired nerve that runs from the brain to the abdominal cavity. Too much stimulation can cause dizziness and loss of consciousness.

You may also faint from laughing so hard due to the sharp drop in blood pressure. Due to multiple muscle contractions, blood “leaves” from the brain and flows towards the trunk – intracranial pressure decreases.

The cardiologist said fainting from uncontrollable laughter usually does not pose a health threat. The person regains consciousness within a few minutes without outside help. However, if you lose your balance while fainting, you could hit your head on nearby pieces of furniture or fall off the platform, for example, if the laughing person is on the subway.

Additionally, laughter could theoretically trigger a sudden spasm in the vocal cords. This condition is called laryngospasm or suffocation. It may occur when a person does not get enough oxygen while breathing while laughing.
