Burmese python (Python bivittatusInitially confused with an alligator due to its size, this species became the second heaviest specimen ever caught in Florida. The heaviest Burmese python was caught in 2022 and weighed 98 kg.
This time the snake was found in the Big Cypress National Forest: it was crawling along the road and was spotted by snake catchers. Five men had to sit on the reptile to immobilize it. Professional python hunter Amy Seavey later euthanized the snake, and when she performed an autopsy, white-tailed deer hooves were found in the animal’s stomach.
The Burmese type is native to Southeast Asia. It is not known exactly how these snakes got to Florida. They were popular pets in the 1970s. They may have been released intentionally or accidentally. With no natural predators to prevent them from reproducing in Florida, their populations exploded, disrupting the ecosystem.
People are allowed to hunt snakes humanely. More than 10,000 Burmese pythons have been captured in the state in the past five years. In 2023, a five-meter-long female Burmese python was captured in Florida. 60 eggs were found in the animal’s body, which the python can lay in the coming days.
