Scientists from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi found that yoga can reduce the frequency of epileptic seizures. Research results published In the journal Neurology.
160 people with an average age of 30 participated in the research. All volunteers had epilepsy. The scientists collected information about the subjects’ health conditions and also asked the participants whether they felt disconnected from society. Then the volunteers were divided into two groups. The first group had to participate in yoga therapy, and the second group had to participate in sham yoga. In the mock yoga group, participants performed various asanas (postures) but, unlike those participating in yoga therapy, did not learn how to relax their muscles and control their breathing.
After three months, it was found that the incidence of epileptic seizures in volunteers in the yoga therapy group was significantly reduced. Most likely, during yoga therapy, participants learned to cope with stress. Stressful situations can cause increased excitability of nerve cells and a subsequent attack. Thanks to yoga therapy, volunteers were able to learn to breathe correctly and relax, which resulted in fewer epileptic seizures.
Additionally, such activities helped subjects reduce their anxiety and feelings of social isolation. Yoga therapy could be an adjuvant treatment for epilepsy, effectively improving the quality of life of people with this disease, the scientists added.
