A total of 1,457 migrants arrived on the Spanish islands off the coast of West Africa between Friday evening and Sunday morning.

The sharp increase in numbers was due to political destabilization in the Sahel, Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said during a visit to the archipelago.

It has been noted that the Canary route has been preferred among immigrants due to the tightening of controls in the Mediterranean in recent years.
