In mid-July 2023, U.S. Army Private Second Class Travis King crossed the border with North Korea during a tour in the border city of Panmunjom. He had to be deported to the United States for systematic violations of discipline the day before his escape. North Korea reported that King had requested asylum from Pyongyang.

Later Associated Press (AP) reportedPyongyang handed King over to Washington. In the United States, a private could face penalties such as imprisonment in a military prison, loss of pay, or “disgraceful discharge,” the AP noted.
