Spicy foods have an unclear impact on human health, said Paul D. Terry, professor of epidemiology at the University of Tennessee (USA). Such dishes, on the one hand, can worsen the condition of people with certain chronic diseases, and on the other hand, can reduce the risk of heart and respiratory diseases. In this respect reports MedicalXpress.

Spicy foods can cause digestive discomfort, headaches and even vomiting. In addition, dishes containing large amounts of pepper, wasabi, turmeric and radish may aggravate the symptoms of intestinal and stomach diseases.

But research confirms that eating spicy foods is associated with a reduced risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, heartburn, ulcers, respiratory and mental illnesses. Additionally, mild pain and burning while eating can trigger the release of endorphins and dopamine, hormones of happiness and pleasure.

The doctor noted that spicy foods should be avoided if they cause discomfort such as migraine, abdominal pain and diarrhea. People who tolerate spicy food well, including residents of Asia, Mexico and India, can continue to eat such dishes – a moderate amount of spicy food will be beneficial for the body.
