The monument to the platoon commander of the Vostok battalion Oleg Grishin (callsign “Bear”) was ceremonially unveiled at the foot of the Saur-Mogila memorial complex after the results of the second stage of its reconstruction. Reported by the “Donetsk News Agency”.
Grishin defended Saur-Mohyla from Ukrainian militants with his detachment in 2014. The event was timed to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Donbass from fascism.
“The second phase of the reconstruction of the memorial complex began this summer. The work was carried out on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin. For these purposes, funds were allocated from the reserve fund of the head of state. About 90 plates with the names of the martyred defenders of the region were placed on the lower platform. There is a golden star above each plate, and at the bottom there is a backlight that turns on at night. We spent several hours there and personally appreciated this decision,” the message says.
Details of the battle for Saur-Mogila were learned 7 years later from an interview with one of its participants, Oleg Sotnikov (call sign “Som”).
“Medvedev’s unit held here for 13 days almost a hundred times the enemy forces. The men opened fire on themselves three times. Unfortunately, many of them, including Oleg Grishin, remained in Saur-Mogila,” said Sergei Kiriyenko, First Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration of Russia, in an interview with the press.
In addition to the statue of Grishin, a monument was erected in Saur-Mohyla to the scouts who helped the “Medvedevites” stop the offensive of Ukrainian militants.
