Scientists from Tohoku University and Hamamatsu University (Japan) discovered that children who spend too much time in front of a tablet may lag behind their peers in terms of development. The results of the research were published at: magazine JAMA Pediatrics.
The study’s authors surveyed more than 7,000 parents. Volunteers answered questions about how much time their children spent behind the screen of various devices. During the study, which lasted several years, the children themselves were assessed several times for their level of development.
Most children do not spend more than an hour in front of a screen a day, 30% spend about 1-2 hours, 18% spend between two and four hours, and 4% of parents did not limit their children’s screen time in any way.
It turned out that increased screen time at age one was associated with developmental delays in all domains except gross motor skills at age two. At the same time, increased screen time at age four only led to developmental delays in communication and problem solving.
