Researchers at the Babraham Institute (partnership of the University of Cambridge) have found that simple dietary changes without calorie restriction can contribute to healthier aging. The results of the work of scientists were announced magazine PLOS Biology.

The authors performed a series of experiments on yeast cells. They showed that switching from a glucose-rich diet to a galactose-based diet led to the molecular changes that normally accompany aging. These findings challenge the long-held notion that calorie restriction alone can lead to a healthier and longer life.

“Thus, the switch from glucose to galactose reduced signs of aging in yeast cells. Other experiments have shown that the health benefits of calorie restriction in rats disappear when the normal diet is continued. This proves that it is important to seek alternative approaches to maintain healthy longevity,” the authors write.

Moreover, the effect of dietary change was most pronounced when dietary changes were made at a young age. Although the study was done on yeast cells that share many cellular mechanisms with humans, more research is needed to explore the effects of dietary changes in humans.
