Scientists from the University of California (San Diego, USA) found that maintaining a stable weight after age 60 is associated with longevity among women. The results of the research were published at: magazine Journal of Gerontology.
More than 50,000 women participated in the study. During the research, more than 30 thousand of them crossed the 90-year threshold. For years, they’ve provided scientists with data on their weight and health.
Women who lost at least 5% of their weight were less likely to have longevity. For those who accidentally lost weight, this rate was 51% less. Weight gain of 5% or more was not associated with exceptional longevity. Older women who maintained a stable weight were 1.2 to 2 times more likely to have longevity.
“If aging women find that they are losing weight even though they are not trying to lose weight, it may be a warning sign of health problems and a harbinger of shortened life expectancy,” the authors said.
