Santa Cruz de Tenerife, August 20 (EFE).- The night was better than expected for the bushfire suppression efforts in Tenerife and the weather conditions are not as bad, the Canary Islands Rescue and Emergency Center reported.

The emergency device expected a “very complex” night after yesterday, when high temperatures, strong winds and low humidity were recorded within 70 kilometers of the fire, making extinguishing efforts difficult and facilitating the fire’s progression. in the northern part of the island.

The forest fire, which spread over an area of ​​8,398 hectares in a 70-kilometer radius, is spreading to 10 municipalities, although 11 of them have been evacuated.

The number of evacuees has been updated as 12,279 with the data provided by the police forces and municipalities, apart from the population census.

During the night, 343 soldiers, including 150 firefighters, were tasked with defending property and homes in the evacuated areas, along with the Military Emergency Unit.

As of the morning hours, 23 aircraft, including 5 seaplanes, joined the firefighting.
