Scientists from Osaka Capital University have taught artificial intelligence to determine people’s biological age from chest X-rays. The results of the research were published at: Lancet Healthy Longevity.

For the first time, doctors have developed a deep learning-based artificial intelligence model to estimate age from chest X-rays. To develop, train, and test the algorithm, the scientists collected 67,099 radiographs from 36,051 healthy people from 2008 to 2021. They went through medical examinations at three different hospitals.

The model was then tested on breast images of patients with various diseases. For this, additional chest radiographs were collected from 34,197 patients with hypertension, metabolic disorders, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Too often, AI overestimated the age of patients with various diseases.

“Our results show that estimated age based on chest X-rays can accurately reflect health status,” the scientists said.

The study could form the basis of new tools for assessing the severity of chronic diseases, estimating life expectancy and possible surgical complications.
