The heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser of the Soviet Union Fleet, Admiral Kuznetsov, may be transferred to the Russian Navy at the end of 2024. It has been reported TASS citing a source in the country’s shipbuilding industry.
According to the source, the revised plan allows factory sea trials of the aircraft carrier to begin in the spring of 2024 and state trials in the fall. If the tests are carried out successfully, the ship can be transferred to the fleet by the end of 2024. In case of problems in the tests, the transfer will be made next year.
The source said that the “Admiral Kuznetsov” was repaired and modernized for the seventh year. Now the ship is on the wall of the 35th shipyard, where construction is being completed and mooring trials are being carried out. The aircraft carrier will be equipped with a completely new fill, including a new deck with springboard, a new power plant, new cable routes, a new takeoff and landing control system for carrier-based aircraft, and a new navigation system.
The source explained that the delay in repairing the ship was due to the failure of timely delivery of equipment by the cooperating businesses and constant changes in customer requirements. It is assumed that after the completion of repair and modernization, the service life of Admiral Kuznetsov will be extended by 20 years.
