RTU MIREA scientists have developed a technology for creating long-acting fertilizers – nutrients are slowly released into the soil after they are applied to the soil, which ensures rational nutrition of plants. This fertilizer increases yield and maintains soil fertility. This was reported to socialbites.ca at the Ministry of Education and Science.

A long-lasting effect is achieved by applying a special biodegradable coating to the fertilizer granules.

“Although the technology is not patented, we cannot explain the composition of the coating. It is a combination of organic and inorganic substances. The composition can cover most of the available fertilizers. Once placed in the soil through the pores in the coating, water gradually enters the granule. The mineral core is gradually dissolved and all nutrients are released into the soil, ”said NI MIREA Julia Taran.

Depending on the thickness of the coating, the release time of the nutrients also varies. The effectiveness of the technology is confirmed by the results of laboratory studies.

“We tested the dynamics of the release of nutrients from the components in the laboratory. More specifically, in water. In the soil, of course, the process will be longer. Now we are not talking about weeks and days, but months or even a year. The time is determined by the thickness of the coating – the larger the fertilizer, the more it works for a long time. Of course, the properties of the soil also play a role – in a hot climate or cold. But it is less important,” added Taran.

Until now, such fertilizers in Russia were mainly represented by foreign manufacturers.
