A 101-year-old woman died in the early hours of today in a fire that broke out at a residence located at 35 Magallanes Street in central Santander.
The emergency services, including 112, received the call around six in the morning reporting a fire in a room of the home where the elderly woman, who reportedly could not move on her own, was located.
The 112 responders dispatched firefighters from Santander, along with medical teams from 061, and both the National Police and Local Police. Officers from the Citizen Attention Group were among those who arrived, together with the Provincial Police Judicial and Provincial Scientific Police brigades.
The latter units are awaiting the opportunity to carry out a technical-ocular police inspection of the residence, while the National Police continues working to determine the causes, as informed by the police force.
The fire service managed to bring the blaze under control within a short time, and residents in two entranceways were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
According to the Santander City Council, two municipal fire crews were initially deployed, totaling 13 effective personnel. A subsequent handover to a second crew of six personnel was performed, though this second team did not need to intervene further.
Investigations continue to clarify how the incident began, with authorities coordinating to determine whether there were any preventable factors in the building and to ensure the safety of other residents. The incident underscores the importance of rapid emergency response and coordinated policing in urban centers. [Cited from city authorities]
