The Wikipedia entry dedicated to Shia LaBeouf is the tastiest; It contains assaults, addictions, arrests, traumatic childhoods, paternity shrouded in mystery, stolen identities, countless cases of plagiarism, consecutive falls into hell and related rehabilitation initiatives. It would be the perfect foundation for an exciting film, or at least a much better foundation than the actor’s out-of-competition film presenting in Venice today, marking his return to acting after 2020. to be blamed sexual abuse and his ex-girlfriend by the singer FKA Twigs psychologicaltemporary withdrawal from the profession.
And the truth is, at least on paper, ‘Padre Pio’ is attractive for several reasons. Its director is Abel Ferrara, an at times stimulating and always unpredictable filmmaker; Y its main character is Pio da Pietrelcina.possibly the most revered saint in Italy, To whom are the miraculous healings and both levitation and bilocation attacks attributed? and also his biography is full of possible relationships with women and financial irregularities. However, very little of it appears in ‘Padre Pio’.
with god and the devil
The movie takes place over a few days in 1920; After confirming that he is a stigmata and proclaiming himself within the Church, the young priest comes to a town called San Giovanni Rotondo to seclude himself. a Capuchin monastery where you will have a dialogue with both God and the devil; meanwhile, on the streets of the place, the first bars of the socialist movement are causing both a workers’ and peasants’ strike and a subsequent workers’ electoral victory, against which the landowners and old authorities will react violently: in October of that year, a fire shot by the police would result in 14 deaths and 80 injuries.
Ferrara is more interested in recreating these historical events than really paying attention to his titular character, which we see in a limited number of scenes muttering, screaming, crying or scowling at an obscure place. The film is unsurprisingly more engaging than anything else that happens in its own footage, in how LaBeouf contributes to the enrichment of its Wikipedia page: Filming caused the actor to convert to Catholicism, which, as he himself admitted, allowed him to get rid of suicidal thoughts.. Less is probably missing for the movie about his life.
