An international group of scientists from the UK, the Netherlands and Australia was discovered by the previously unknown shark species living on the British coast 70 million years ago. Pararhincodon Torquis turned out to be an old relative of modern collar carpets, but have unique anatomical properties. The study was published scientifically magazine Royal Community Open Science (RSOs).
Paleontologists have studied two fossilized skeletons hiding in the London Natural Historical Museum for decades. Initially, it was classified as representatives of Synechodus, but CT scanning and dental extraction (just a few millimeters) showed: this is a completely new shark.
According to the researchers, Pararhincodon Torquis had three soles of the spine fin, there are only two bases of modern carpet sharks. This changes the idea of ​​the development of the whole group.
The modern grandchildren of Pararhincodon Torquis live on the shores of Asia and Australia. The subject of future research.
Researchers said that the opening has become a missing connection in the evolution of carpet sharks.
