Scientists from Australia and France have discovered signs of the origin of a new continent in the southern part of the Indian Ocean, not far from Antarctica. According to a published study magazine Terra Nova is actively formed in this region – the basis of the future land.
The analysis of the composition of the rocks has shown that the structure of the shell here is very different from the typical ocean. Researchers draw attention to an average growth rate of 0.001 kilometers per year and reach 0.8 kilometers in separate regions. These processes occur in the sinking areas where the ocean plate enters under the continent and caused the first stage of the formation of the continents and causes the formation of the magma.
According to scientists, the growth of the new cortex began about seven to twelve million years ago and maintained the current pace, while a full -fledged motherland will need to be about the same time to occur in this area. One of the basic signs of this process was the accumulation of a granite layer – the main building material of all continents existing.
The discovery confirms that the geological activity of the world continues even in the farthest and apparently stable regions of the planet.
