Andromeda (M31) galaxy put a new puzzle on scientists: 37 out of 37 of the brightest satellite galaxies are on the side of the Milky Way. According to simulations, this regulation has less than 0.3%. The study was published scientifically magazine Nature astronomy (Natastro).
German astrophysicists from the University of Potsdam drew attention to an unusual tendency. Observations using the Hubble space telescope showed that M31 is the only one of the famous galaxies with such an excessive asymmetry.
According to scientists, a similar picture may be the result of an old conflict. About 2-3 billion years ago, Andromeda could suck another great galaxy that groups its satellites. However, this does not explain why all mini galaxies gathered on the side of the Milky Way.
Researchers added that Andromeda could get more satellites in other parts, but they are not yet open due to low notification.
The proposed theory predicts the accidental distribution of satellites, but reality shows complex structures that require new explanations.
Scientists plan to check if such asymmetry is characteristic of other galaxies outside the local group (including the Milky Way, Andromeda and Galaxy Triangle).
