NASA spacecraft “Lucy” passed through asteroid Donaldjokhanson and delivered the first pictures of this unusual space object to the ground. This has been reported area American space agency.
Asteroid Donaldzhokhasson was named after Paleontologist Donald Johansson, who found the famous skeleton of Austopithecus in Ethiopia in 1974. It was called “Lucy”.
It turned out that the object was much larger than scientists expected: the length is about eight kilometers and the widest part is 3.5 kilometers. The asteroid shape looks like Keglu for bowling, and Lucy will be expanded so much that Lucy could not catch her right away. Full data is expected about the structure and size of the object during the next week.
The flight took place on Sunday, April 20, 960 kilometers from the asteroid on the main belt between Mars and Jupiter. This rapprochement was a test in front of more important tasks – examining the Jupiter Trojan asteroids planned for the coming years.
Lucy spacecraft will travel most of the remaining 2025 throughout the main asteroid belt. In August 2027, Lucy will face the first main target of Troy Asteroid Jupiter Eurybat.
Previously, scientists learnedWhich meteorites almost never reach the ground.
