“A chicken is not a bird, a dentist is not a doctor.” Orthopedic surgeon on bullying and threats against patients

– Patients go to the dentist. How often do you encounter neglected cases and do they disgust you?

– Patients with a frightening picture in the oral cavity occur, but this is not the vast majority. As a rule, these are the elderly or children who lead an asocial lifestyle.

After ten years of work, even the dirtiest mouth doesn’t disgust me. I saw completely decayed teeth, ulcers, and pus flowing from the gums, which could be counted with the fingers of one hand. At such moments, doctors are not obnoxious, even during training they see what they will face and are literally ready for the worst. So if you love your job and people, everything is tolerable.

Meanwhile, doctors do not change their attitude towards patients whose teeth are neglected. Although it is always interesting, especially in severe cases: how did he manage to bring the oral cavity into such a state?

Would you date someone with bad teeth? For example, with the possibility of recovery.

– You know, they still meet in clothes. Personally, I would never start a relationship with someone with bad teeth. Or with those who do not monitor the condition of the oral cavity and have poor hygiene. A person should take care of himself. After all, you take good care of your skin, hair, nails, clothes. New teeth do not come out, they need to be cared for more and more.

Of course, this does not get to the point of absurdity, and if a person has a wrong bite or their teeth are not perfectly white, this does not repel me. But bad breath, unhealthy yellowness of the teeth, or dangerous crowds that for some reason one person would not fix, would definitely scare me.

But I repeat, if this is some kind of bruise, then everything is normal and I would gladly treat myself, completely free of charge.

– After watching some adult films from the “doctor’s appointment” category, some patients are afraid to go to the dentist and treat their teeth, for example, under anesthesia. You never know what is happening when the patient is unconscious. Is such a scenario possible in real life?

– If I knew there was such a porn, I would definitely look at it, but maybe once and then for enlightenment. I have nothing against me, but not for me. If we talk about whether this will actually happen, it is very unlikely. First, it is also a crime that the patient and doctor are not romantically involved and disagree, which is a rather strange fetish.

Second, the probability of being caught is high. Unless the reception room is shared by several doctors, there are always assistants in the dental office. The doors of the offices are never locked either, because another doctor may be out of supplies or something at some point and will go to you for them. Some clinics are even equipped with cameras.

Thirdly, diapers are put on patients under anesthesia, just in case. Even with the preparation of anesthesia, the factor of sudden bowel movements occurs. If we are talking about oral sex, it will be quite difficult, you will have to fix your mouth, which will constantly close … In general, I’m sure it’s just some kind of stupidity.

– Dentists are considered the highest caste among doctors, for example surgeons. Do dentists therefore bully other specialists?

– On the contrary, other doctors bully dentists.

Ever since our student days, my classmates and I have only heard the saying “a chicken is not a bird, a dentist is not a doctor” from doctors and pediatricians. Meanwhile, the teachers also said: All my colleagues, without exception, faced such neglect.

Many people think that dentists make “easy” money, but our job is hard and extremely painstaking – physically, mentally and morally tough.

Also, due to the relatively recent development of dentistry as an independent direction, we are not taken seriously if we take the medicine as a whole. Moreover, they say that we only treat the head and neck, and they know everything about the human body. In general, doctors are annoyed that their colleagues have to teach more, and salaries are often less. Dentists, on the other hand, feel uncomfortable when their value and importance are underestimated.

Are patients annoying?

– There is. Someone is testing for us, someone is threatening. People came, discussed and asked them to do a paid service for compulsory health insurance, which is not included in this compulsory health insurance. You try to explain – they shout that they will complain and sue. Sometimes there are dissatisfied customers. For example, before any orthodontic treatment, the doctor warns that the later it is started to correct the bite, the more difficult it is, so for various reasons the result may not be justified. The patient shakes his head and then the braces are removed and one tooth looks slightly to the side – the tooth structure is not quite aligned. Well, you cheated, it starts with a horrible doctor and human and stuff like that. Although we always warn patients about this.

There are those who really suffer from their carelessness. A mother brought a child to our anesthesiologist recently, who asked her if they had tested for an allergic reaction to anesthetics. He said yes, made sure everything was fine, but did not give a piece of paper with the results, allegedly forgot it at home. In general, the anesthesiologist kept his word, gave the injection, and the boy developed anaphylactic shock. Thank God I managed to make up my mind.

In general, what just happens in the dentist’s chair – and shocks, fainting and seizures. Children vomit constantly, especially during measurement. A colleague of mine recently had a patient who died suddenly at reception, well pumped out – clinical death.

But there are also funny situations. At the beginning of summer, my grandmother came to us to make prosthetics, she was 80 years old. So they took a photo and it turned out to be 5 “milk” teeth.

– It is believed that in paid clinics everything is fine, but in state clinics, on the contrary, everything is bad. Really?

– Indeed, for some reason everyone thinks that private clinics are better, but they are not. Good specialists work in government clinics and control over them is closer due to the number of people who complain and want to sue. You can also get a private job through an acquaintance, but getting a government job is more difficult. I myself worked in a private clinic for five years and then transferred to a clinic near my home. I only noticed the difference in the fact that the public clinic does not have all the services and supplies that private practices offer and more time is spent seeing a patient. And of course, you should be as friendly and courteous as possible.

One way or another, there are bad doctors everywhere and there is no way to protect yourself in either a private or a public clinic.

Nikolai Romanovsky, a dental orthopedic surgeon with ten years of experience, told socialbites.ca the difference between paid and state clinics, anaphylactic shock in the dental chair and never being able to relate to someone with bad teeth.
