Antiarrhythmic drugs can cause depression, the European Medical Center (EMS) Patimat Yakhyaeva’s psychiatrist and psychotherapist Gazete.ru told.
Drug or drug -related depression occurs as a side effect on the background of taking certain drugs.
“There is evidence that antiarrhythmic drugs may cause depression. The first messages on the connection of depression and the connection of antiarrhythmic drugs appeared in 1967. Then a study was done: Among the 89 patients receiving propranolol, almost one third (27 people) suffered from depression and two committed suicide. After that, the theory of the connection of high lipophilicism emerged (the higher lipophilicism – the ability to dissolve the fats, the easier the substance penetrates into the cell membrane) and the best penetration of the brain through the hematngr barrier, supporting the homeostasis of our central nervous system.

“In the meantime, for water-soluble beta-blockers, all these unpleasant symptoms are less characteristic, because they get worse than hematoencephalic barrier. In my application, I did not meet the examples when depression occurs against the background of antiarrhythmic drugs. On the contrary, my patients had a positive effect on receiving beta blockers with depression or anxiety disorders. Drugs helped to stop tachycardia, and this contributed to a good condition. ”
