A group of international scientists, led by Italian experts from Ferrara University, made an unexpected discovery by determining that the ancestors of Europeans had dark skin, eyes and hair. Light pigmentation just 3000 years ago began to dominate the iron century. The study was published at the following address Portal Regional Scientific Materials Biorxiv.
The team analyzed 348 old DNA samples from 34 countries of Western Europe and Asia. In order to evaluate pigmentation, a Hirisplex-S system was used to predict the color of the skin, hair and eyes based on genetic data.
People came to the European region about 50,000-60000 years ago and for the next thousand years, almost different from their African ancestors. The genes responsible for light features began to emerge about 14,000 years ago, but remained rare for a long time.
Europeans began to be enlightened for evolutionary reasons – the more pale skin provided advantages in weak sunlight conditions in Europe and contributed to the synthesis of vitamin D required for the health of bones and muscles.
At the same time, the emergence of blue or green eyes did not have evolutionary advantages and can be associated with an accident or sexual choice.
