“Any of the Air Force Commanders dreamed of having heavy weapons in their arsenal”

Tests of the 2S25 self-propelled anti-tank gun, which received the designation “Sprut-SD”, have been carried out since 2018. They took part in the landing troops, where the gun was placed on the chassis of the BMD-4M and on the basis of the BMP-3. The development of the machine was carried out by TsNIItochmash JSC, which is part of the Rostec Corporation system.

“State tests of the modernized 2S25 self-propelled gun have been completed, and their bulk deliveries to the troops will take place in the near future,” Rostec vice president Vladimir Artyakov told reporters.

According to him, the 2S25 self-propelled guns are an armored tracked floating vehicle with a powerful artillery and missile system. “This self-propelled gun can overcome water obstacles and at the same time shoot in motion. The machine is capable of combat operations in the highlands, swampy areas, tropical and arctic climates, ”Artyakov emphasized.

“The main requirement of the Ministry of Defense for new self-propelled guns is to increase their main combat characteristics through the use of new equipment, in particular aiming devices and fire control devices. Most importantly, the chassis of the self-propelled gun should be combined with other armored vehicles of the landing troops, ”Sergey Belousov, a member of the College of Military Specialists, told socialbites.ca.

Among the advantages of the 2S25 artillery system, called the “tank destroyer”, is the firepower of 125 mm – the same as that of the T-72 and T-90 tanks. At the same time, self-propelled guns can use various types of ammunition – high-explosive fragmentation, armor-piercing and cumulative.

Armor-piercing reaches 770 mm of armor under dynamic protection. There are also guided anti-tank missiles in the ammunition load.

Self-propelled speed – 70 km / h on the highway and unpaved surface, the floating car moves at a speed of 7 km / h. The combat compartment of the self-propelled guns was also modernized, a new fire control system was installed here, including those with combined sights with television and thermal imaging channels.

The gun is equipped with an automatic loader, which independently feeds the required type of separate loading ammunition into the chamber. The standard ammunition load is 40 rounds, which are on board during landing and are ready for use as soon as the crew takes their places.

“The course of the military special operation in Ukraine shows that the landing troops need large-caliber heavy weapons,” Colonel General Georgy Shpak, former commander of the Air Force, told socialbites.ca. – Our troops have always focused on mobility and the ability to deliver military equipment to the battlefield by parachute, which somewhat reduced the combat potential due to restrictions on the weight of airborne equipment. Now the Air Force can use tanks and heavy artillery systems, which are transferred both by land and by military transport aircraft, without losing their efficiency. At the same time, the need to use parachute landing of large-caliber guns that can “break through” the enemy’s defenses, but sufficient to use multi-dome or parachute rocket systems, remains.

The general added that “any Air Force commander dreams of having in his arsenal a mobile heavy weapon capable of supporting the landing forces with fire at the landing site, repelling an enemy attack and developing the offensive themselves.”

For a long time, the main means of fire support for paratroopers was the BMD-1, and paratrooper units were armed mainly with small arms and grenade launchers.

“The start of serial production of the 120-mm divisional-regimental airborne self-propelled artillery and mortar installation in 1981 can be called a breakthrough of the 2S9 Nona-S. With its entry into service, the Air Force has significantly expanded its combat capabilities – the new weapon can fire both direct fire and on a hinged trajectory. The emergence of the new Sprut-SD system is also a historical event. The landing party really needs such machines, ”shpak concluded.

The Air Force will soon receive the modernized 125 mm self-propelled artillery 2S25, known as the Sprut-SD. “socialbites.ca” understood why the landing troops needed these self-propelled guns.
