International scientists team found that women had a higher risk of developing a long Covid development compared to men. Published in İş Magazine Jama Netw is open.
The analysis of the data of more than 12,000 people, which emerged at least six months before the questionnaire, revealed that the probability of encountering long symptoms in women was 31% higher.
This gap is particularly noticeable among secondary school women. In the 40-54-year-old group, the risk of developing a long-term COVID development was 48% higher than men with the same age category. The difference between women over 55 years was 34%. At the same time, no significant difference was observed between gender in the 18-39 age group.
Researchers argue that the differences in the work of the immune system can play an important role in this phenomenon. In women, more active immune response, which can initially contribute to more severe and long -term inflammation. An important role is played by the estrogen hormone that regulates immune activity. A decrease in perimenopause and menopausal periods may increase the risk of long consequences of COVİD-19.
In addition, authors of the study pay attention to the similarity of a long -term Covid with autoimmune diseases where women are more prone. Studies have shown that in patients with long -term COVID, autoantothems attacking the body’s own cells can be produced and worse the symptoms.
According to scientists, the data obtained emphasize the more investigation of mechanisms for the development of long -term COVID and the investigation of more effective methods of treatment, especially taking into account the gender differences in age and risks.
