Researchers from the Houston Methodist Department of Otolaryngology showed that a single RF intervention significantly improved the condition of people with chronic rhinitis, and the effect persisted even after 12 months. The study was published in the journal International Forum of Allergy and Rhinology.
Tested by doctors, the RF interference system is highly sensitive due to its ability to maintain a temperature of 60 degrees. This ensures that the device does not damage healthy parts of the nasal passages. It works by heating the tissue at the back of the nose, thereby impairing the nerve’s ability to send signals that cause chronic rhinitis symptoms.
After 12 months, patients who underwent the procedure reported a 57.8% improvement in symptoms not seen in the placebo group. The intervention had no serious side effects other than bleeding that stopped within a day, mild dry eyes, headaches, and sore ears. These side effects have been observed in only a few people.
Chronic rhinitis is an upper respiratory tract disease characterized by an almost constant runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing, coughing, itching in the nose and throat. Many patients are compelled to consistently take vasoconstrictor nasal agents or to undergo treatment courses with topical corticosteroids that suppress inflammation and local immunity. The emergence of an effective treatment without side effects will significantly improve the quality of life of people suffering from chronic rhinitis.
