Scientists from the University of Oulu (Finland) have discovered 41 new regions of the genome that affect the risk of developing intervertebral disc herniation. A herniated disc is the most common cause of low back pain, which often requires surgical treatment. Risk factors that can trigger the occurrence of intervertebral hernia include overload, injury, poor posture, excess weight and developmental abnormalities. The role of genetic factors in intervertebral disc degeneration has been identified relatively recently. Science already knows that 23 genomic regions can influence the risk of pathology.
In a new study of the genetic data and health of 829,699 volunteers, researchers identified 41 additional areas that determine the likelihood of a herniated disc. The scientific team determined that the discovered areas were located close to genes that regulate inflammation and synaptic transmission of nerve impulses.
Five new genomic regions were associated with severe pathology requiring surgical intervention. Genes that affect the duration and intensity of back pain have also been identified.
Scientists noted that the findings and data sets could be used to develop medical and preventive solutions in the future. For example, genetic data on pain severity may be useful in creating analgesics for patients with herniated discs.
