A team of French archaeologists from the National Center for Scientific Research discovered a small 4,400-year-old city called al-Natah in the Khyber oasis in western Saudi Arabia. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine PLOS One.
Scientists excavated a central area and a residential area surrounded by protective walls. The settlement contained large amounts of pottery and grinding stone, as well as the remains of at least 50 dwellings made of clay.
There were two buildings in the center of Al-Natah that could be used as administrative offices. A necropolis was found west of here. Tall round tombs resembling stepped towers have been preserved.
The city in the Khyber oasis, BC. It was abandoned between 1500 and 1300 for an unknown reason.
According to scientists, the finding shows that urbanization is slower in the Arabian Peninsula. At that time, major cities were already developing in Mesopotamia, Egypt and the Eastern Mediterranean, and the population of El Natah was no more than 500.
