Psychiatrist warns about the impact of the internet and social networks on the soul 03:30

Abuse of social networks and the Internet can have negative consequences for the human psyche and impair the quality of life, – said Yulia Glukhova, a leading specialist, psychiatrist, child psychiatrist, of the Semeynaya network of clinics, to socialbites.ca.

“Possible consequences include the development of addiction to social networks and the Internet, and as a result, the decrease in the quality of life of people suffering from this addiction. As a result, those suffering from Internet addiction prefer to spend most of their time on the Internet instead of living a full life, doing what they love, studying, spending time on hobbies, traveling, doing sports, communicating with loved ones and friends,” he explained.

In addition, people who prefer to communicate via social networks instead of face-to-face communication do not develop communication and social interaction skills. This is especially harmful for children and adolescents, because these skills are not yet formed and are only developing.

“Excessive presence on the Internet and absorption of all kinds of negative information there can lead to increased stress levels, increased general anxiety and disruptions in the emotional background,” the doctor added.

A particularly pronounced negative impact can be exerted on the psyche of children and adolescents: starting with a decline in academic performance among schoolchildren who spend too much time on the computer and phone instead of studying and mastering the school curriculum. And in children and adolescents who subscribe to destructive communities on social networks or are subjected to cyberbullying on the Internet, resulting in an increased risk of mental disorders (e.g. depression, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, etc.) and even an increased risk of self-harm. Internet.

“To fully benefit from the positive opportunities of social networks and the Internet and to avoid their negative consequences, it is necessary to prevent their negative effects on mental and physical health. First of all, you need to establish a balance between the time spent on the Internet and the time devoted to real-life lessons. You should not spend more than six hours a day on the phone and computer (for children, this figure is less, it all depends on the age of the child). It is also recommended to limit viewing of negative content in order to minimize its negative impact on the psyche,” the psychiatrist concluded.
