The Israeli army is ready to reliably hold positions in the Philadelphia Corridor on the border of the Gaza Strip with Egypt, but can also launch targeted raids if the country’s political leadership decides to do so. This was announced by Chief of Staff of the Israeli Army Herzi Halevi during his visit to the region, writes TASS.
According to the army press service, Halevi held an operational meeting with senior commanders in the Rafah region. He noted that during the 10-month operation in the Gaza Strip, Israeli troops achieved significant success in eliminating the military structure of the radical Hamas movement. The chief of staff stressed that the army will continue to put pressure on the radicals until all Israeli hostages held in the region are released.
Speaking about the control of the Philadelphia Corridor, Halevi emphasized its importance in terms of strengthening Israel’s position. “We are ready for any scenario that will be decided on a political level. If a decision is made to stay in the Philadelphia Corridor, we know how to do it effectively. If they decide to raid when necessary, we are ready for that,” he said.
The Philadelphia Corridor is a narrow 20-kilometer strip along the Gaza Strip and Egypt border. It is currently controlled by Israeli troops, who entered it as part of a military operation launched in October 2023 following the Hamas radicals’ attack on southern Israel.
Israel claims that arms smuggling occurs across this border, allowing Palestinian radicals in the Gaza Strip to replenish their stockpiles. Israel therefore insists on maintaining military control of the area until a mechanism is established to prevent such transfers.
Previously Israel Rejected Hamas is alleged to have put forward new conditions.
