The world’s most powerful laser facility UFL-2M, created at the Sarov Nuclear Center, will be put into operation in five years. This was reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the director of the nuclear center, Hero of Russia Valentin Kostyukov.
“We’ve now implemented the first phase, we’re at a pretty serious stage of justifying the costs and the timing of implementation to get it to full capacity, which is the limit right now,” he said.
According to him, in the next 4-5 years this facility “will be fully operational and will produce results, including the solution of individual problems.”
The UFL-2M installation is designed for fundamental research in the field of high energy density physics. Among the unusual tasks of such a laser is how to eliminate asteroids, he noted.
In 2015, Kostyukov already statedHe said that the world’s most powerful laser installation of the new generation UFL-2M, built in the territory of Sarov Technopark, is planned to be put into operation in about five years.
Previously reportedHe said the US left open the possibility of importing uranium from Russia.
