Krasnodar oncologists repaired the tongue of a patient with stage 2 cancer using tissue taken from his forearm. This was reported by AiF-South.

The 47-year-old man, who has been smoking for over 30 years, noticed an ulcer on the edge of his tongue about three months ago. He didn’t go to the doctors right away, only when he felt pain in his mouth and had difficulty eating.

Doctors diagnosed stage 2 tongue cancer. Treatment was complicated by the fact that the tongue’s structure could not be restored with local tissues, so the patient’s forearm tissue had to be used.

After the flap was removed and the tumor was removed, doctors began transplanting tissue and tying off blood vessels. The study was carried out using a microscope, as the vessels in the operation area did not exceed 3 mm in diameter.

“Two teams of surgeons did everything possible for eight hours to ensure that the patient could continue to eat, breathe and speak. The man now faces long-term radiological and drug therapy,” writes AiF-South.
