British scientists from Oxford University studied the relationship between the level of serotonin in the body and people’s reactions to negative events. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine Nature Communications (NatComms).
Serotonin in the brain helps nerve cells communicate better. It affects sleep (control of sleep-wake cycles) and appetite, muscle condition and body function, character and mood, and regulates the intensity of anxiety, happiness and mood in general.
The study included 26 participants who were given medication to increase their serotonin levels, as well as 27 participants in the control group. The volunteers were asked to complete a series of tasks that measured their ability to learn and control their behavior.
Scientists have found that increased serotonin levels allow people to better manage their behavior, especially when exposed to negative information. Increased serotonin has also been found to have a beneficial effect on various types of memory.
According to experts, a large amount of serotonin in the brain can make a person more vulnerable to risk, because in this case, the person can more easily tolerate unpleasant events (for example, losing money). At the same time, reactions to positive events do not change.
“This suggests that serotonin, which is involved in depression and the effects of antidepressants, plays a larger role in processing negative things rather than enhancing positive responses,” the study authors wrote.
