Scientists from Yale University in the US found a relationship between poor quality sleep and the risk of developing atrial fibrillation, depression, obesity, anxiety disorder, hyperlipidemia and hypertension. Research results published In Nature Medicine.
The study involved 6,785 adult volunteers with an average age of 50.2. In the first phase, scientists collected information about the participants, recorded their height and weight, and also analyzed the medical history of each volunteer. After that, the observation process of the participants began.
More than four subjects wore Fitbit devices on their wrists that allowed them to track a person’s heart rate and movement patterns while they slept. The devices are also used by scientists to track changing sleep stages.
After the observation period, scientists compared data on the quality of nightly sleep with indicators of the subjects’ health status. The results showed that irregularity in deep and REM sleep was associated with an increased risk of developing atrial fibrillation, a heart rhythm disorder. There are also links between irregular sleep patterns and depression, obesity, anxiety disorders, hyperlipidaemia (excessive accumulation of fat-like molecules in the blood) and hypertension.
