Anti-government protests in Bangladesh have left around 250 people dead and the Asian country’s prime minister has announced his resignation. The bloodiest day so far was this Sunday, with 91 deaths. The protests were against a quota system for civil servant positions, with 30 percent reserved for relatives of veterans of the war of independence against Pakistan. The Supreme Court, which set the streets ablaze, reduced that figure to 5 percent. It was too late, as protesters are now demanding the resignation of the Board, the punishment of hundreds of people and the release of those detained. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country after movement leaders refused to meet her. In addition, the internet has been almost completely suspended, as have long-distance trains and buses.
