Speaking to socialbites.ca, Doctor of Medical Sciences, immunologist and specialist in particularly dangerous infections Vladislav Zhemchugov said that West Nile fever can be transmitted through tick and mosquito bites.
“In the Mediterranean region, West Nile virus, which causes fever in the Nile Delta, is constantly present. The carriers of the virus are mosquitoes and ticks, and the reservoirs of infection are birds (especially corvids and blackbirds) and rodents. The virus spreads as follows: a mosquito bites an infected animal or bird. The virus came to Russia with migratory infected birds and rodents that were in the holds of ships,” Zhemchugov said.
As the doctor noted, the virus is currently circulating in the Northern Black Sea region: Crimea, Volgograd and Rostov regions, Stavropol and Krasnodar regions, the North Caucasus and other regions.
“Due to the hot summer this year, infected mosquitoes are actively spreading in areas where they are not present. These are Moscow, Kazan, Ryazan and other large cities in the Volga region and central Russia. In winter, due to the cooling of the weather, the frequency of occurrence in these regions will decrease. West Nile fever is especially common between June and October, when conditions for mosquito development are most favorable. However, outbreaks of the disease occur not only in summer, but also in early autumn and spring due to ticks that become active and also carry the virus,” he said.
